"Client Q&A: Steve Schaeffer of Creative Dimensions"

Creative Dimensions Agency in CincinnatiCreative Dimensions is a full-service advertising agency that specializes in strategic planning, advertising, design and branding, digital marketing, and media planning and buying. The company was founded in 1972 by a local advertising legend, Arnold Barnett. Steve Schaeffer purchased the agency in 2012. He has a background in copywriting and broadcast production, and has worked in the Cincinnati advertising market for the past 25 years.

Q: What trends do you see having an impact on the marketing industry in the near future?

A: “Cord cutters”—people switching away from traditional television in favor of internet-driven TV—are growing in number each day. For broadcast advertisers who don’t adjust to this trend and incorporate streaming commercials into their marketing plans, it means losing an opportunity to build brand awareness with an entire generation of increasingly connected consumers. Smart TVs and over-the-top (OTT) devices like Rokus are serving as the new disruptive technology that is driving a massive industry shift.

Q: What marketing advice would you give to a business that is just starting out and has a limited budget?

There are a few things you can do that cost little or nothing. Begin by developing an “elevator pitch” to describe and sell your business in a minute or less. Networking is also a great way to get your name out there and help build your business. (I have to confess, however, that this is something I myself struggle with.) In terms of paid
marketing, the first thing I would recommend is developing a good website with good content. Once that is up and running, paid Google ads (Search Engine Marketing) can be very effective in driving prospective customers to your site, and you can set manageable limits in how much you would like to spend.

Q: What is the marketing campaign that you are most proud of?

A: We created a campaign for The Gilkey Window Company that features the grandchildren of their president, Mike Gilkey, and it has received a tremendously positive response. People have actually called Gilkey Windows to say how much they love the commercials, even people who aren’t in the market for windows. The Gilkey team has told
us that the “Lego” commercial is the best spot they’ve had produced in their 40-year history. As a result, the campaign has increased sales for Gilkey, which is obviously the most important reason we are proud of this work.

Q: What do you like most about your partnership with OfficeKey?

A: First, the staff at OfficeKey couldn’t be nicer. They are always professional, helpful and flexible, besides that, being able to work and host meetings at multiple locations has also proven to be a great convenience.

Steve Schaeffer, Creative DimensionsQ: How do you spend time outside of work?

A: I have a wife of 18 years and two daughters, 11 and 13, and most of my time outside of work is spent with them. Both daughters cheer for Loveland, so we are very involved in those activities. We have one of the oldest homes in Clermont County, therefore I’m constantly doing some type of home improvement, which I actually do enjoy. One of my other passions is horseracing, and I’ve qualified and competed in the National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas two times. It’s like the “World Series of Poker for horseracing.”

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

A: Being a mind reader would be nice (after all, I live with three women).

Q: What is the best vacation you ever took or the place you haven’t been that you would most like to go to?

A: My wife and I try to take vacations alone every couple of years, and some memorable trips were to Aruba, Italy and England. We would like to visit Ireland as well. Our favorite place to vacation as a family is Sanibel Island in Florida. We go there every other Spring break, and it’s always a wonderful trip.

Q: What is your favorite movie or tv show?

A: I have a couple of favorite movies, Goodfellas and Shawshank Redemption, and if I’m channel-surfing and one of them is on, I stop every time.

"Meet Content Strategist Susan Wenner Jackson"

Susan joined OfficeKey in May of this year although she’s been very active in Cincinnati for many years creating content at such companies as dunnhumby and Ahology. She is already enjoying the quiet workspace and the day offices.

Q: Tell us about your business.

A: I am an independent content strategist and writer. Primarily, I consult with businesses on content marketing (web and social content, blog posts, email campaigns, etc.) I also help develop and execute creative marketing campaigns (print and digital). The other part of my work is running my blog, Working Moms Against Guilt, which I started with some friends in 2006. It’s still going strong!

Q: What type of clients do you like to work with?

A: My favorite clients already “get” the power of content marketing. When I don’t have to sell them on the idea (sales is definitely not one of my strengths), I can really pour my energy into creating content that attracts and connects with their ideal customers. It’s also quite nice when clients are committed to doing content right, and open to new ways of doing things.

Q: Is there a specific type of content that you particularly enjoy creating?

A: I’ve always gotten a kick out of experimenting with different media, from social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) to audio (podcasting) and video (tutorials or promotional). But really, I’m a writer at heart. I feel most in my element writing long-form pieces such as detailed blog posts or magazine-style articles.

Q: How do you spend time outside of your work?

A: A lot of my non-work time is devoted to my family. I have a husband and two children, ages 8 and 11, plus a very energetic dog (German Shepherd/Husky mix). I am also active in my church, Harmony UU in Maineville.

Q: What do you like most about working with OfficeKey?

A: Flexibility is probably the best part for me. Usually, I just need a desk, so the open wifi area at West Chester is where you’ll most often find me. But when I need to meet with clients or partners, the various rooms and locations really come in handy.

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

A: The power to create peace.

Q: What is your favorite movie or tv show?

A: Star Trek for both: The Wrath of Khan (movie) and Deep Space 9 (TV show).

Q: What is your favorite book?

A: Asking this question to a person who loves reading and writing as much as I do is like asking who’s my favorite child. But I will say some of my top picks are To Kill a Mockingbird, The Catcher in the Rye, The Color Purple, and Moby-Dick.

You can learn more about and connect with Susan on LinkedIn.

"Meet Drew Dinkelacker of Marketing Accelerator"

Drew Dinkelacker, Marketing AcceleratorQ: Tell us about Marketing Accelerator.

A: Every business needs strategic marketing help…they just don’t need it five days a week.  I’m the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for a handful of business owners on an as-needed basis.  I’m on your team, not your payroll.

Q: What type of clients do you like to work with?

A: My clients cover multiple industries, are B2B and B2C, some retail, some wholesale and some are franchises.  The common denominators I look for are growing companies and business owners that are frustrated with their marketing effort.  Often they have spent plenty of time and money on marketing tactics and advertising but aren’t getting the ROI.  My perspective in these situations is that the company needs an outside voice to look at their marketing effort for the strategic perspective, not tactical.

Q: What inspired you to begin reviewing Super Bowl commercials?

A: For the last five years, I have been a voting panelist member of USA Today’s AdMeter Ratings for Super Bowl Commercials.  I’ve probably watched more of these ads than anyone else you know, and I write about them on my Hot Marketing Tips blog and in the Cincinnati Business Courier.  The best talent from around the world develop the Super Bowl spots. I figured that there was something that I could learn from dissecting them.  I quickly realized that these spots often set the standard for new marketing techniques.  Often, I observe the underlying strategies being used and share them with my clients.  It is a good benefit for them even though they may not be using TV advertising.  Strategies are that way.  That’s why I focus on them.

Q: What is your all-time favorite Super Bowl commercial or campaign?

A: Choosing an all-time favorite Super Bowl commercial is difficult.  However, I would say that my all-time favorite product introduction was Deathwish Coffee…“Awaken your inner rebel with the world’s strongest coffee.”  From the Superbowl spot to the tagline and overall campaign, it was very well done.  Just this week, their cold brew nitro coffee in cans got recalled due to a botulism concern.  The news headlines read” ‘Death Wish’ coffee recalled because it can literally kill you.”  For most companies, this would be bad PR but somehow I think it will work in Deathwish Coffee’s favor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_3H_Y5QUWw.

Q: How do you send time when not at work?

A: Tennis, gardening and cooking

Q: What do you like most about working with OfficeKey?

A: The staff at West Chester,  Blue Ash and Hyde Park where I spend the majority of my time.  Friendly, accommodating and very professional representation of my business.  I look forward to going to my OfficeKey locations.

Q: What is your favorite singer or band?

A: Bob Seger / Bruce Springsteen

"Google Your Business"

Google local listingsAt our October Key Connections lunch, Joe Danzer, local Google Representative, shared some knowledge about how Google local listings work and how to make them work better for your business.

  1. Claim your local listing. If you haven’t claimed your Google listing you can start the process here. Claiming your business allows you to edit the information and puts you ahead of unclaimed listings in your industry (your competitors).
  2. Add pertinent information to your listing. The more details you add, the easier it is for potential customers to contact you. Many people use the Google listing to make their first contact.
  3. Use your OfficeKey Address. Joe mentioned that our shared address is no problem! He said that Google is aware of shared office situations and will allow more than one business at one address, so please use your OfficeKey address for your local listing.
  4. Add 10 photos to your listing. If you have 10 photos, Google can tell that you are actively in business and puts your listing above other listings that are not as visually appealing.
  5. Get 10 legitimate reviews for your business. Having reviews helps potential clients see that you are a reputable option for their needs. Getting 10 valid reviews will put your listing higher than other listings. The best way to get reviews is to ask your very happy customers to submit them. Once you claim your listing,  you can send your customers the link to your listing to help them find it easier!

If you have any questions about how to claim and update your local listing, send an email to [email protected]. We’re glad to help!

"Design, Marketing, and Media Professional"

Media Expert in Cincinnati, Ohio

What Jeremy Gotwals enjoys most about the work he does at Holon Publishing is being paid to create. Gotwals recalls always having a passion for creation. He’s starred in two MTV shows, was on American Idol, and created a film that prompted him to hitchhike across the country to the Burning Man Festival. But before fulfilling his creative outlets, at age nineteen he realized that as a generally creative person, his most desirable situation would be having the opportunity to make a living creating.  Gotwals finds joy in being able to bring together the creative parts of his personality with the strategic and technical aspects of his business.

Holon Publishing can be halved into two facets of business. On one end, they do publishing consulting, which includes editing, designing, publishing, distributing, marketing and promoting published materials that range anywhere from a small project of fiction from an artist, or more professional geared material from an educational source. The other half of Holon’s business is a straightforward digital agency that deals in tasks such as branding, web design, social media or targeted ad campaigns.  And of course, Gotwals appreciates being able to share this combination of creation and strategy with the people he does business with. He brags that his clients are interesting and unique, and it’s a privilege to be able to do business with people from all ends of the world.

OfficeKey has been an instrumental part of Gotwals’ growing his business. So helpful that he was prompted to use the word, “outstanding,” when describing the services we provide. What he appreciates the most is OfficeKey’s phenomenal flexibility that it brings to business of any size. Furthermore, he praises OfficeKey as being a service provider that can bring big business amenities to a small or remote business. Gotwals names his most valuable resource at OfficeKey to be the community. The people in the OfficeKey locations, whether it is our employees or other clients, come together as a flexible community, willing to provide their specific services to their peers and be supportive in any way possible. Collaboration, Gotwals says, is the most valuable thing OfficeKey has to offer.
